Comments on 2011's Top Faith Stories

This week Jan Markell of Olive Tree Ministries (a fantastic discernment ministry) posted her picks for the “The Top Faith Stories of 2011.” I believe her list accurately shows the current trends and direction of the Church, America, and the world at large quite well. I have commented briefly on each news event below. Please be sure to check out Jan’s weekly radio program and visit her online radio archives. She has had so many excellent guests and experts on her program over the years. If there is one thing Christians need today it is more discernment.

The Top Faith Stories of 2011

#1: Rob Bell’s attempt to legitimize Universalism.

Rob Bell is a major player in the postmodern ecumenical seeker-sensitive neo-liberal cult called the “Emergent Church”, or “Emergence Christianity”, or “Progressive Christianity” which is spreading universalism and a ton of other apostasies through the Church like a cancer. Describing what the Emergent Church truly believes can be about as difficult as nailing Jell-O to a wall, but three things are certain:

1) The Emergent Church  believes it is absolutely true that there is no absolute truth.

2) Their central strategy to increase church attendance is to take orthodox Biblical Christianity and turn it into mush.

3) The Emergent Church should be renamed the Submergent Church.

Universalism is the belief that all people will be saved after death. According to The Barna Group, currently half of all American adults believe in this blatantly false ideology which is guiding millions straight to hell. During Jesus’ earthly ministry, He spoke more often about hell then he did heaven. I wonder why? Could it be that He knew that the dangers of hell were for real?

Thankfully, like most postmodern beliefs, universalism is self-defeating and therefore easily proven to be false. Universalism is actually claiming that all mankind (which has a free will) will be saved and go to heaven, including those who “do not” freely choose to be saved or desire to go to heaven.

Universalism may sound nice and loving on the surface, but is actually morally bankrupt. God is not some benevolent dictator, rapist, or pimp. God will never “force” anyone to love him back and accept the free gift of pardon which Jesus Christ purchased for them on the cross. To be saved all anyone has to do is repent and accept Jesus as their personal Lord and Savior. Is that too complex for the church to teach? For the “Submergent Church” and so many other liberal churches today the answer is “Yes!”

#2: The Arab Spring’s darkest side: The destruction of Christians in the Middle East.

The Arab Spring was a foreseen disaster from the very beginning by anyone who understands Islam and the Middle East. Either the Obama Administration, which purposely fanned the flames, was either completely clueless about what was going to be the end result (just like the mainstream media), or the Obama  administration knew perfectly well what was most likely going to occur – that the entire Middle East would be destabilized, the Muslim Brotherhood (which was once allied with Adolf Hitler) would be democratically elected and take power, and eventually a united Middle East Islamic caliphate would form to permanently take care of the problem called “Israel.”

I’m not too worried about Israel though, according to the Bible (Psalm 83, Obadiah, Isaiah 17, Zechariah 12, Ezekiel 38-39, etc..) the Muslims will be the the ones who get wiped right off the map:

“And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people; And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem.” -  Zechariah 12:3,9

#3: Tim Tebow’s demonstration of faith and thankfulness to God no matter how much scorn he came under.

Denver Broncos Quarterback Tim Tebow has been ruthlessly mocked by many of his fellow Americans  and especially by the mainstream media for boldly sharing His faith in Jesus Christ. But, in effect these folks have been unwittingly mocking a messenger of God. Tebow is famous for having written in his eye black while playing in college “John 3:16”. That Bible verse says: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

Praise the Lord for last Sunday’s match-up against the Pittsburgh Steelers. It was sweet justice indeed! Not one network analyst picked the Denver Broncos to beat the Pittsburgh Steelers in Sunday’s National Football League Wild Card game, yet the game will go down in NFL history as the “Tebow 3:16”. The Broncos won and Tebow passed for 316 yards and had ten completions for a 31.6 yard average.

Tebow wrote in his book “Through My Eyes” that in 2009 when he switched from his previous Bible verse “Philippians 4:13” to “John 3:16” for the Florida Gators National Championship that: “I’m told … ninety-four million people searched for John 3:16 on Google during and immediately following the National Championship Game.”

Praise the LORD!

#4: The rise of Chrislam: The  merging of Christianity and Islam on the part of foolish Christians who believe the two faiths can share “common ground.”

Chrislam has about as much in common with true Biblical Christianity as Biblical Christianity has with  Voodoo and witch doctors. This wacko cult began in Nigeria in the 1980s, but thanks to political correctness (i.e. Cultural Marxism) and relativism, has since spread to America where 59% of adult Americans think that the god Allah is the same as the God Yahweh.

The LORD commands in Exodus 20:3: “You shall have no other gods before Me.”

#5: Evangelical leaders saying we are putting our trust in nuclear weapons and not God so America must disarm! Doesn’t get any stranger than this.

What on earth will these folks come up with next? Probably a plan to save the dolphins for Christ.

#6: The Presbyterian Church U.S.A. allows non-celibate gay pastors to remain in leadership prompting defections from the denomination.

This is complete apostasy. If your church teaches that “gay is okay” either correct them or flee. The plague of homosexuality we see in America today is a “judgment” from God upon our nation. Read Romans 1:18-32. Clergy who teach that homosexuality is acceptable or practice this abomination have no business being clergy! Period.

#7: A new nation is born: Christian South Sudan… an ally of Israel.

The South Sudan gained their independence from northern Sudan last July after more than 25 years of brutal fighting that killed more than 2 million people. Unfortunately, as expected since Sudan to the north is still filled with Muslims and ruled under Islamic Sharia Law it is now restarting the war to reclaim South Sudan’s oil and territory. This is typical Islam in action because Mohammad himself in 628 AD used this very tactic during the Treaty of Hudaybiyya. The warrior Mohammad signed the peace treaty for a single purpose, to finally conquer the Quraish tribe of Mecca. The thinking being, sign the peace treaty so you can reopen hostilities at a more opportune time and then gain military victory.

Under Islam, once a nation has been conquered, it is considered by the Muslims to be theirs forever. If they somehow lose the territory then it “must” be reconquered for Allah.

Pray that the LORD will watch over the Christians in South Sudan and will keep them safe. The “blessing and the curse” applies to them too and I think they know it:

“I will bless those who bless you [Israel],
And I will curse him who curses you;” – Genesis 12:3

#8: The rise of lawlessness manifest in the ‘Occupy Wall Street’ (OWS) movement which is now a foreshadowing of the lawlessness outlined in the Tribulation spoken of in Matthew 24. The OWS movement has a sinister anti-Semitic undertone.

Never in the history of the United States has an administration actively promoted and supported civil unrest in America until now. The OWS movement is also openly supported by all the professional hard left agitators in the United States: Communist Party USA, The NAZI Party, The Socialist Party of America, ACORN, SEIU, etc.. Little wonder it is also supported by all our enemies too. Everyone from the likes of former Soviet Union head of state and devout communist Mikhail Gorbachev (who writes books in San Francisco about the dangers of global warming and the need for a New World Order)  to  Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez.

Jesus warned that in the last days society would be filled with lawless people exactly like the OWS mob. Notice that Jesus said people would be offended of the truth (i.e. politically correct),  filled with hate, deceived (used as pawns), and completely out of control:

“Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for My name’s sake. And then many will be offended, will betray one another, and will hate one another. Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many. And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold.” -  Matthew 24:9-12

One thing is for certain, things are only going to get MUCH worse as we near the next election.

#9: Global debt, which feeds into the longing for a “man with a plan;” a global Mr. Fix-it. Only a man with the name of Antichrist can solve the world’s economic problems.

Fabian Socialists unlike communists want to implement global socialism (big government) through evolution rather then revolution. They often do this by using a manufactured “crisis” (often economic) to create “change.” As former White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel said: “You never want a serious crisis to go to waste. And what I mean by that is an opportunity to do things you think you could not do before.” When severe trouble strikes our nation, make no mistake, these turkeys are actually gleeful!

Most of the global elite and central bankers are Fabian Socialists and have done an absolutely brilliant job of setting the world up for the coming “global” economic crash while at the same time fleecing the public wholesale.

Too bad these guys don’t study 2,000 year old Bible prophecy. If they did they might actually find out what they were really accomplishing – setting the stage for a brutal global dictatorship and (most likely) a full blown nuclear war.

#10: Harold Camping’s antics: His Rapture date-setting put the event on the map but led to the further mocking of our ‘blessed hope.’

Tragically, date-setters like Harold Camping never EVER learn:

“But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only.” – Matthew 24:36

#11: Three “New Agers” in the pulpit of Rick Warren’s Saddleback Church, all of 2011. They put on a year-long health seminar. Warren allowed in well-known occultists, Drs. Amen, Oz and Hymen, to help his congregation “get in shape.”  They may have destroyed some spiritually.

You wouldn’t believe some of the crazy New Age stuff the “doctors” Rick Warren hired for his own church practice. The sign outside his church last year should have read: “Would you like to be physically fit and demon possessed? Then join Saddleback Church.”

Rick Warren is a wolf in sheep’s clothing and sits on the advisory board of The Tony Blair Faith Foundation, an ecumenical organization which is working overtime to unite all the religions of the world in an effort to “use religion” to bring about “global governance and social justice” (i.e. socialism). Rick Warren like Tony Blair is a Fabian socialist and also believes in pluralism.

Pluralism is the belief that all faiths are equally valid and teach the same moral lessons. This year The Barna Group also found that almost half of the adults in the United States believe the lie of pluralism. In other words, almost half of America is so spiritually blind and has so completely bought into the lies of political correctness and relativism that they cannot see any major difference between the teachings of Biblical Christianity and the teachings of Wicca, Mormonism, Satan worship, Voodoo, neo-pagan earth worship, or Scientology whose “holy text” is based entirely on a science fiction article written in 1950 by L. Ron Hubbard for Astounding Science Fiction magazine.

Not surprisingly, pluralism like universalism is also self defeating and therefore easily proven false. Often those who believe in pluralism believe that no view is exclusively true, but if no view is exclusively true then pluralism is not exclusively true either.

On the other hand, some other pluralists believe that all religions are true. But if that is true then Biblical Christianity must also be true. But, if Biblical Christianity is true, then Jesus really is the only way. But, if Jesus really is the only way, then all religions cannot possibly be true.

Obviously, pluralism is completely absurd!

#12: Glenn Beck’s “Restoring Courage” event in Israel. According to many attendees who were evangelicals, the hidden agenda–and not so hidden at that–was the Mormon-promoting aspect of the trip.

I actually like Glenn Beck, but why do polytheistic Mormons who think they will one day become gods and rule their own planet insist that they are really Christians, but that Christians are not really Mormons??? Hmmm…

#13: a) The evangelism program of the Catholic Church to bring folks ‘home to Rome’; b) Vatican’s cry for global government back in October.

The Vatican has been pushing ecumenicalism, pluralism, socialism, and globalism for decades just like so many others. Notice how all these different globalist groups, sects, religions and cults believe that “they” will be the ones to restore the “paradise lost” and that “they” will be the ones to create “peace on earth” instead of Jesus Christ.

#14: The rush to the predicted globalization system of the world and the continued silence of the church on such urgent last-days’ issues.

The way the global elites see it, their greatest enemy are those “stubborn uncompromising intolerant Christians” (who hold to sound Biblical doctrine and truth). They see us as their greatest hindrance to finally ushering in a peaceful global utopia. It is a pipe dream of course, but they are idealists rather then realists and believe that man is evolving and basically good by nature. The Bible says quite the contrary:

“The LORD looks down from heaven upon the children of men,
To see if there are any who understand, who seek God.
They have all turned aside,
They have together become corrupt;
There is none who does good,
No, not one.” – Psalm 14:2-3

These deluded idealists in positions of power, truly believe that they can successfully create a one world economy, a one world religion, and a one world government. Then poverty, disease, crime, and everything else under the sun which isn’t good can be abolished, but according to the Bible mankind will in fact wipe out most of the planet in its attempt to pull off this humanistic fantasy. Jesus told us ahead of time what would happen:

“because those will be days of distress unequaled from the beginning, when God created the world, until now—and never to be equaled again. If the Lord had not cut short those days, no one would survive…” – Mark 13:19-20

In the meantime, expect outspoken Christians who hold to sound doctrine to be even more maligned and marginalized. Using history as a guide, if cultural Marxism (i.e. political correctness) doesn’t silence us, then  imprisonment, and executions are next on the menu. Hey, it’s all for the greater good of the collective. Right?

#15: The continued rise of the paranormal and the sanctioning of that by many Christians who supported the final Harry Potter film in 2011.

I think a much bigger story this year was that the U.S. Air Force Academy built an $80,000 outdoor pagan shrine for cadets who are pagans, Wiccans, druids, witches, followers of Native American faiths, worshipers of the earth, and huggers of trees. I kid you not, the $80,000 shrine consists of a circle of boulders and propane fire pit!

Bottom line, the Church in America and the world as a whole is in a world of hurt. The good news (and it is good indeed) is that the current global economic, political, and anti-Christian religious systems we see developing right before our very eyes were all prophetically recorded in the Bible long ago, especially in the book of Revelation, and Jesus Christ said:

“Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near.” – Luke 21:28

Come soon Lord Jesus!
