The Destructive Heresies of the Emergent Church

In the United States, most don’t believe in absolute truth. Rather they are “post-modern” and believe the lie of relativism – that truth (especially moral truth) is subjective and based on ones own personal feelings. They believe that “what is true for you, may not be true for me” or “perhaps, we are both right.” About ten years ago, many well intentioned pastors and ministers began experimenting with new ways to get the post-modernists to attend church. Unfortunately, rather then sticking with the true authentic gospel of Christ, they believed that a new more post-modern form of Christianity was required. One that was seeker sensitive, that removed all the controversial and often offensive topics such as: sin, hell, repentance, that Jesus is the only way, that all the other religions are false, etc.. Well, to make a long story short, the new “lukewarm Church” strategy worked. The pews could indeed be filled by simply diluting the gospel, being seeker sensitive, and by promoting universalism – that all religions are equally valid. The emergent church movement was born, but instead of saving post-modern souls, the emergent church has unwittingly been setting them up for destruction.

“There will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction. And many will follow their destructive ways, because of whom the way of truth will be blasphemed.” – 2 Peter 2:1-2

The emergent church movement is nothing more than a white washed tomb. How can one be saved without discussing sin and repentance? If truth is subjective and based on feelings, how can any behavior be wrong or any particular religion be right? Has Christianity become a man-made religious smorgasbord? Can we simply take a bit of the true gospel, mix it with some eastern mysticism, add a splash of secular humanism, give it a shake, and pour out the same life giving water which is freely given to us by Jesus Christ himself? Any pastor or minister who says that Jesus is not the only way to the Father should be instantly removed from the pulpit. By simply suggesting such a blasphemous lie, they make our Lord and Savior into either being the most evil twisted dishonest man who ever lived or a stark raving lunatic. How many thousands have been martyred and died grueling horrific deaths for refusing to deny that Jesus is the only begotten Son of God? The emergent church has exchanged the rock solid foundation of the true gospel of Jesus Christ for quicksand.

Many in these emergent church congregations are fed the prosperity gospel: “Just believe in Jesus and you will be given what you desire. You won’t suffer in this life. God only wants the very best for you. Just believe in Jesus.” But, what do you think will happen to the faith of these people when our economy implodes and many lose everything they own? What will happen if one day they are told to renounce Christ or be thrown into prison? They will instantly become disillusioned and turn away from Christ without a second thought. They will then turn to the next religion that “feels right”. The emergent Church movement is destroying souls, not leading people to salvation.

The Church must stop compromising with the world and start teaching absolute truth. We do this by first boldly standing upon the authority of Gods inerrant Word. Our post-modern society needs to be taught what truth actually is. They need to understand that truth is never relative or based upon ones feelings or emotions. Rather, truth is universal and applies to everyone, no matter what anyone personally believes. Until they understand this, they will never be standing on solid ground. Ephesians 4:14-15 says:

“We should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ— “

Once a person is firmly grounded upon a rock solid foundation of absolute truth, they can begin to fully comprehend what placing their faith in “The Truth” (Jesus Christ) means.

Show me Your ways, O LORD;
    Teach me Your paths.
Lead me in Your truth and teach me,
    For You are the God of my salvation;
    On You I wait all the day. – Psalm 25:4-5

Have a blessed Day,
